governor’s island opened to the public

On Saturday morning, a good friend of ours Kevin Leong called us and asked if we were going to see the polo match on governor’s island. I didn’t know anything about the match or the island, but it sounded quite interesting so decided to go. Later I found out on the way that Prince Harry from England would be joining the match.. double surprise for getting onto the forgotten island and watching  a polo match with one of the royal family is playing!

週末、友達のケビンから電話でガバナーズ・アイランドにポロのゲームを観に行かないかと誘われれ、そんなイベントがあるのは知らなかったけれど面白そうなので行ってみる事にしました。途中、イギリスからハリー王子が来米していてゲームに参加するという噂を聞き、第二次世界大戦後、初めて一般公開するガバナーズ・アイランドに行ける（マンハッタンよりフェリーで５分ほど）ことの興奮に加えて２倍おいしい話が舞い込んできて。。

This island used to be used as a military facility (an important military function until the 1960’s) and later transferred to the Coast Guard and had not been functioned since 1996. Most of the buildings are very well preserved and have got some kind of charm to the architectual design (very simple and spacious), yet you can tell no one has been lived there for a long time. Today, the city opens it up during summer for people to visit.

この島は以前は軍用地でのちに海上保安隊の駐屯地となったのですが、１９９６年以降は誰も住む事無くそのままにしてあったそうです。島にある建物は歴史が感じられる古い家ですがとてもよい状態で残っていました。今年の夏、ほとんど初めて一般の人に解放することになりました。

I thought about this island as the perfect place to live! I’ve always wanted to live in nature but super close to the city. I wonder the government will sell the property on governor’s island to the public in the future…

「ここに住みたい！」と思えるほどマンハッタンを目の前にしながらも大自然に囲まれ、広々とした開放感いっぱいの住居。そのうち一般の人も住めるようになるかしら。。
